Snorkeling
If diving is a little too expensive or sub-aqueous for your liking, but you would still like to view the beautiful natural treasures that lie beneath the ocean, then snorkeling is the next best thing! The best part is that this water activity requires no prior experience or specialized equipment other than goggles and a snorkel. Explore the beautiful coral reefs and marine fauna and flora of the third largest island in Thailand, Koh Samui. The seas surrounding Koh Samui are calm and perfect for inexperienced snorkelers and the large sand banks that lie between the stone formations ensure that the water remains calm the entire day. Beneath the surface of the turquoise waters lie hidden treasures and exciting places that are just waiting to be explored. Escape from the hustle and bustle of the crowded beaches and swim in amongst brightly colored fish, strange sea creatures and densely populated coral reefs.
Sailing
Soar across the glassy ocean with the wind in your hair while comfortably seated on a luxurious catamaran. Sailing safaris are on offer at just about every tourism store and outlet on the entire island. Visitors have the option to either join one of the existing tours or, if they have the money, can charter a private boat to take them to all the sights and attractions they wish in their own customized tour of the island. Alternatively, for those with the experience and a boating license who prefer to navigate their own way around the water, there are many rental places open around Koh Samui, which are available on an hourly or daily basis. For those of you who don't know how to sail, you could take back the ultimate souvenir from your trip to Thailand; learning how to sail. Sail your own catamaran from island to island in the company of a safety vessel. Tourists can even spend the night on an island and then sail the catamaran to the next island the following day.
Kayaking
Enjoy a trip around Ang Thong National Marine Park, one of Koh Samui's most popular tourist attractions and the inspiration behind famous author Alex Garland's spectacular novel, and now major motion picture, 'The Beach'. Another reason to get down to the beach and hire out a kayak is so that you can get to navigate your way round this spectacular aquatic park and get the best views of the islands. Kayaking tours usually begin in the morning when guests are seated comfortably on a large boat while enjoying a light breakfast. When you arrive at the Ang Thong National Marine Park you will be greeted by a professional tour guide who will give you a brief on what the rest of your day with consist of. You are then issued your kayak and are free to explore the winding shoreline and to discover magical caves and stare in awe at the bizarre rock formations that Ang Thong is famous for.
Fishing Trips
Koh Samui is a jewel of an island situated to the east of the Thai Peninsula in the warm waters of the Gulf of Thailand. Fishing is more than just a tourist attraction on this island; it has for centuries been tradition, with some of the island's earliest inhabitants making their livelihood from the activity. Nowadays, fishing on Koh Samui has become a sport and a major tourist attraction as much as a tradition. There are many fantastic fishing trip packages available for those with a passion for the hunt on the open waters. These tours include half day excursions, full day trips, big game fishing and even night hunts. Most packages organize air-conditioned transport from passengers' hotels to the place of launch and back again, as well as lunch and fishing gear. With luck and skill, your adventures aboard a Thai fishing trawler will end up with you enjoying a mouth-watering dinner of fresh Snapper, Barracuda, Cobia, Sailfish or Grouper grilled on the fire.
Thai Boxing (Chaweng Stadium)
A trip to Thailand isn't complete without an evening being witness to the action, the pain and the bunching of sweat-slicked muscles that is Thailand's national sport. Muay Thai, or Thai kick boxing, is just as honored a sporting tradition in Koh Samui as it is in the rest of this tropical paradise. Tourists and locals alike cram into Chaweng Stadium, the biggest sporting arena of its kind in Thailand, every Monday and Friday evening from 9pm to 12am to watch the blood and sweat fly. Muay Thai kickboxing is similar in essence to western boxing, except it allows the use of knees and elbows. Contestants are allowed to land punches as well as kicks on their opponents, making the individual fights far more exhilarating, action-packed and often shorter. Chaweng Stadium is the premier destination for those wishing to have a glimpse into the world of Muay Thai and comes complete with the constant babbling of local commentators, throngs of tightly-packed audiences and lots of beer.
Go Karting (Bophut)
Koh Samui is as exciting a destination for its natural beauty as it is for its array of fun sporting activities and who doesn't love a turn at the Go Kart track? If this is your opinion of a rip-roaring time, then Samui Go-Kart, situated at the northern end of the island at Bo Phut on Samui Ring Road, offers a perfect high octane and fun-filled day for the whole family. The Go Kart track has three vehicles available for visitors to choose from, with the fastest ones capable of speeds of up to 100km/hr. Samui Go-Kart caters for the entire family and for people of all levels of experience (and bravery). First timers and youngsters are encouraged to use the lower horsepower cars to avoid plummeting into the barriers, while regulars to the track love the bite and roar of the more powerful vehicles. For those who prefer to watch the action, there are refreshments available as well as a pleasant seating area.
There can be nothing more exhilarating than navigating your way around an obstacle course in the hot sticky tropical heat with a massive paintball gun under your arm. Paintball is a game, also considered a sport, that has taken the world by storm and now paintball enthusiasts can enjoy this tactical and exciting game in the heart of the tropics on the jungle island of Samui. For those who are unfamiliar, paintball is a game of strategy and cunning, where your closest loved ones become the enemy and your high caliber paintball gun your only friend. Bullets are made from plastic paint-filled balls that pack a sting and leave opponents splattered in every colour of the rainbow. Opponents need to employ every skill and faculty at their disposal to avoid being shot, so dig deep and unearth that ninja-like stealth. But, whether you are shot within the first five minutes in the jungle obstacle course or are the last one standing, paintball Samui is a guaranteed riot.
