Tattooing
One of the most popular things to do when visiting the tropical island of Koh Samui is to get yourself a permanent souvenir! So popular is the art of tattooing, not just on the island, but in the rest of Thailand that tattoo shops are to be found just about everywhere! In Samui, there are a great number of trained and experienced tattoo artists - the legendary Khun Nong is said to be the best - whose shops offer mounds of books of photos, designs and styles from which you can choose. You will find Thai writing, monk tattoos (which are said to imbue one with magical powers), tribal as well as Western or modern designs available. Alternatively, if you have an idea of your own, most tattoo artists are more than happy to translate your vision into reality! Just note: it will serve you well to investigate the standards of hygiene in the studio first before letting the needle anywhere near your skin!
Thai Cooking Classes
While the stunning island of Koh Samui offers a great number and variety of shopping opportunities, perhaps the best thing you can take away with you from your adventure in Thailand is the ability to cook delicious Thai food! Koh Samui has many cookery schools, all run by world-class Thai chefs who have dozens of year's worth of experience in the catering business. Visitors and locals alike are encouraged to engage in their dynamic and interactive lessons, walk around Thai fresh food markets learning about the different kinds of produce and pick up the essential skills, food knowledge and techniques necessary to become an expert in Thai cuisine! Southeast Asia is a destination well-regarded and loved for its exotic, fiery and complex cuisine flavors and aromas. It is also known to be extremely healthy! There are a variety of classes on offer, which are generally run around lunchtime or in the evening and you will also be able to choose your level of involvement, whether it be for a single class or a series of classes.
Spa & Detox
Kho Samui has come to be widely regarded as the health centre of southern Thailand. Whether this is absolutely true or not is entirely speculative, however, one thing is for sure: there are a great number of fantastic spas on the island that make health and physical and spiritual well-being their priority! Koh Samui is a haven for those looking for the ultimate getaway somewhere peaceful and spiritually nourishing. The health spas located around the island are some of the best and most luxurious the world has to offer and have several packages available for visitors to choose from, including detox, yoga, alternative therapy, total body rejuvenation, specialty massages, healing, manicures/pedicures, waxing, etc. You can get just about any kind of pampering treatment you want, from hot rock massages to herbal steam baths. Get a total body mask, relax in the sauna and indulge in the variety of treatments, regimes and rejuvenating therapies. The Koh Samui spas will leave you glowing with health and completely spiritually centered. What better backdrop in the world to find harmony than on a tropical island in the gulf of Thailand?
Thai Massage
There is nothing better than lying sprawled on a beach chair with the expert fingers of a Thai masseuse straining and prodding all of that pent-up stress and fatigue out of your muscles! With its dazzling array of pristine beaches, the island of Koh Samui constitutes the perfect destination to experience the stress-busting Thai massage. Thai massage is actually considered to be an art; one that is world revered for its incredible techniques that get right to the core of tension and pain. Massages are advertised on just about every street in the island, where people can literally kick off their shoes and get their feet massaged with herbal oils right on the side of the road. Little massage houses are also exceptionally common as are their seedy backstreet cousins. Then there are the big hotels and resorts that feature their own up-market spas, where Thai massage is taken to a whole new level of pampering! If you're expecting a pleasurable message from a Thai masseuse, then perhaps think again… Real and authentic Thai massage is serious and is more about health and well-being than comfort!
Yoga
Yoga is undoubtedly the exercise craze of the 21st Century and here on the emerald island of Samui, those with a passion for the spiritual rejuvenation, relaxation and fitness associated with it have many options at their disposal. There's no reason why a holiday into the East should interrupt your yoga regime; there are plenty of yoga teachers living on the island that extend classes and one-on-one lessons to anyone with a passion for the lifestyle. Most of the resorts, hotels and retreat centres, such as Centered Yoga, Samahita Wellness and Yoga Thailand provide classes and meditations for its guests. Ultimately, Koh Samui offers a beautiful and serene island setting for those looking to find spiritual clarity and rejuvenation. With lush tropical forests as a backdrop against the turquoise crystal waters of the Gulf of Thailand, a dawn session of yoga with the rising sun proves to be most invigorating.
Festivals and Ceremonies
Thailand is a country of many festivals and ceremonies. The pervasive religion here - Buddhism - calls for the regular upholding of many ancient traditions and rituals, which are executed by all generations, old and young. Perhaps the two biggest annual celebrations are Songkran, the Thai New Year, which is held mid-April and the Light festival of Loy Krathong, held on the 12th lunar month's evening of full moon (generally in mid November). The former sees the crowds in their throngs throwing buckets of water all over the streets and each other in a ritual that symbolizes cleansing for the New Year. The latter involves the releasing of hundreds and thousands of lanterns upon the waters of Koh Samui's rivers, streams and of course, the beach. The Western New Year is also observed in Samui, as are Thailand's King and Queen's birthdays (5th December and 12th August respectively). Then there is the Buffalo Fighting festival, the Full Moon parties, Children's Day, Buddha's Birthday, Samui Regatta (sailing competitions), the Bowling Championship and the Fishermans Village Festival, to name but a few!
