Cabaret Shows
Koh Samui is well known for its many great late night entertainment venues, live shows, beach parties and other experiences. But the most famous and best late night shows on Koh Samui are perhaps its world famous lady boy cabaret shows which are simply not to be missed by anyone, lady boy fan or not.
Known as Katoeys in the Thai language, Thailand's lady boys have earned a world renowned reputation and it's not just because there are so many of them. The biggest reason is because some of them just look so good, that you wouldn't even know they were a man. Indeed, it's a well known truth among veteran travelers, local expats and even Thais that it can sometimes be impossible to tell the difference. These shows vary greatly in explicit content though are generally tame enough for most foreign visitors. Clubs are generally geared toward tourists of all kinds with a few notable exceptions.
Some of the
best cabaret shows include:
- Christy's Cabaret - The oldest show on Samui. The show offers free entry and starts at 10 pm every night. You're sure to have a fun and inexpensive night out here. Located in central Chaweng.
- Star Cabaret - Widely regarded to be the funniest of all cabaret shows in Samui, this one charges a small cover charge to get in but it is well worth the price for an hour and a half of non stop giggling. Drinks are very cheap and the show starts at 10pm.
- G-Bar - This is the latest and most modern cabaret show in Samui. The show actually takes place in a hip and funky gay bar, so you might want to be careful who you talk to in there! The show kicks off at 10 pm every night.
Thai Boxing
In addition to lady boys, Thailand is also famous for its boxers and on Samui you will have plenty of chances to see some Thai boxing in action. There are many bars around Samui that offer cheap and cheerful Thai boxing shows, though to see the real thing you need to get yourself over to the Chaweng Stadium, Thailand's biggest indoor stadium.
Known as Muay Thai, the fights themselves feature vicious and crunching kicks, punches to the head, knees to the stomach, headbutts and many more astounding moves. These fights are carried on with loud cheers and frenzied drumming from spectators in the background, making for a truly electric atmosphere. Fights are held every Monday and Friday at 9pm.
Go Go Bars
Another kind of late night show that can't go without a mention are the nightly escapades to be seen at the various girlie bars in and around Samui. There is a vast number of these bars dotted around Samui, with most of them concentrated at Chaweng and Lamai beaches. They offer a number of different types of shows. Not much more needs to be said, but if you're intrigued then they're easy enough to find by yourself.
