Another of the quieter and more family orientated beaches on Koh Samui featuring several resorts and big hotels, Big Buddha beach is nevertheless a lively and exciting place at night. Big Buddha offers many quiet, chilled out beach bars, live entertainment shows, live bands and good food to keep you occupied while you hang out in the evenings.
Bars and restaurants
Most of the bars and restaurants at Big Buddha beach are down on the beach itself, so if you are out and about in the evening you could certainly do worse than to take a stroll by the sea and see for yourself what's on offer.
Heart and Soul
The Heart and Soul bar and grill, located adjacent to the Sunset 2 Resort at the beach is one of the more groovy and cool locations to hang out at night time. The owner of this place has an extensive collection of CDs dedicated to the sound of soul and jazz. It's a great place to come and chill out, listen to smooth sounds and munch on a delicious selection of kebabs and steaks from the charcoal grill. Heart and Soul is also very reasonably priced too.
Sunset Bar
As you would expect from a place with a name like this, it really does offer a spectacular view of the nightly sunset. Located on the beach and popular with backpackers, Sunset Bar offers reasonably priced snacks and drinks and mellow live music, typically in the form of house or reggae. Sunset stays open till about 2am every night.
Sibelius
This place is a particularly welcoming establishment, ran by a Scandinavian couple named MikKoh and Krista. As one would expect, they specialize in all kinds of Scandinavian dishes, for example the Lightly Salted Beef Carpaccio (the house special) or the creamy soup that comes with home made Swedish rye bread. Sibelius is located basically in the center of Big Buddha beach and will stay open late every night, serving food and drinks until 1 am.
Others
In addition to the beach bars, the main town itself has a few decent nighttime attractions that are worth visiting.
The Secret Garden Festival
The main event at Big Buddha which has been going strong since 1995 is the Secret Garden Festival, but actually isn't so secret anymore! The festival is now a very famous draw for tourists and is also popular with locals as well. The festival kicks off every Sunday at 5pm by the Secret Bungalow Resort, hence its name. Each week, many visiting bands and musicians will take turns to perform impromptu acts on the stage and the whole format contributes to creating a friendly and vibrant atmosphere. Most Sundays the festival will attract between 200 to 300 party goers, all sporting a very festive mood.
The Big Buddha Cafe
A favourite hang out for some of the older visitors to Big Buddha, the BBC is the place to be if you are a fan of 60's and 70's music such as the Beatles or the Rolling Stones. BBC serves fine coffee and has a great menu featuring a barbecue grill and some delicious Thai dishes to satisfy most any appetite.
