The definitive Koh Samui beaches guide

If you are a beach lover than the island of Koh Samui really is a must to visit. The Koh Samui beaches are truly beautiful and have a wide variety of geography. The island of Koh Samui is the third biggest island in Thailand and sits just off the coast of the mainland. It is part of a group of about 90 islands of which 4 are inhabited and Koh Samui is the biggest. The island is about 53 kilometres in circumference and most of that coastal area is glorious sandy beach.

There are many beaches to choose from. The most popular of Ko Samui beaches is Chaweng beach. The reason for this is not just the quality of this 3 kilometre stretch of beach, but also the lively nature of the beach itself. The entire stretch is filled with bars and restaurants playing music and plenty of holidaymakers enjoying their holiday to the fullest. This is usually the first choice for younger holidaymakers that enjoy the music and the party atmosphere. Lamai beach is another popular beach. It is not as busy as Chaweng beach but still one of the more lively Koh Samui beaches. It stretches about 2 kilometres and is a bit narrower than Chaweng. The water on this beach also gets deep very quickly so is great for swimmers.

If you are looking for quieter beaches then some of your better options are Bophut beach, Big Buddha beach and Maenam Beach. All these locations have fantastic sand and swimming, as they are just a little less developed than Lamai and Chaweng. For some, the perfect beach is one that is completely empty and unspoilt and they definitely do exist on the island. You will find most of the empty beaches on the west coast of the island where there is very little tourist development. It is quite normal to find a spot on these beaches and be there all day without seeing anyone at all!

Whichever of the Koh Samui beaches you choose you will not be disappointed. The beaches all have fine golden white sand and crystal clear water. The hot season means that the sea is warm and it can actually feel like you are stepping into a bath! The quieter beaches have a charm that can't be beaten with the coconut tress growing alongside the beaches and the quiet noise of the wildlife behind. You could not really ask for more from a beach holiday!
